Kindergarten Clean Up

We went walking around the school. "Lots of junk" said Iain. "I can't believe people do this" (Cali). "What happens to the animals and their habitats? Is it hurting them? (Makayla) " Let's all pick up junk"

we found so much stuff. "I can't believe it." (Lola)

We decided to bring the cans into our school for recycling.

We were pleased with ourselves! Our school yard is cleaner and animals have a better habitat!!

We were so excited to have so many visitors at our Animal Habitat Museum. We loved reading our reports and sharing information about our animals. Enjoy our slide show.

Animal Habitats & Animals In Winter

Our study on Animals In Winter began with a puppet show and then with reading lots of books about animal habitats. We visited the 4th grade to hear about animals that they created and to see how they made them so they could adapt to winter. We were very inspired. We found animals that we could use in our block corner and in the sand corner. We created habitats using branches, pine needles and cones and lots of other things. We could not find books on all the animals that we wanted to study. We decided to take a trip to our public library. We met the librarian and told her what we needed. She directed us to the area that had books on all kinds of animals. Almost everyone found a book on their animal.

We went to The Discovery Museum in Turners Falls. We saw many different habitats and the animals that live in them. They looked real! At that point we had chosen an animal to study. It was particularly exciting to find our own animal. The people at the museum thought we were very smart and were impressed by how much we knew about animals. We loved the animal scavenger hunt.
Finally it was time to write our reports on our animals. We researched our books to find out: Where our animal lives in the winter, What our animal eats, When our animal has babies and how many, and other things that are special about our animal.

We spent time observing what our animals looked like. We drew our animals over and over. We then began to sculpt our animals out of clay. We had hard decisions to make: Should we use feathers for our tails or use clay? What should we use for our eyes, beads or painted clay? After the clay dried we had to decide what colors to use.
We learned about our animal's winter habitat. We created the habitat out of shoe boxes. Again, after much research we gathered the things we needed durning a walk. We found pine boughs, rocks, twigs and "snow". We painted the background and foreground.
We now were ready to open our Winter Habitat Museum. We invited our families and the first grade classes. We each had a station and invited friends to listen to our reports and look at our dioramas. It was a great success and lots of fun! In our next post, you will see pictures from the event!

How To Books

Children took turns reading the books they wrote on "How To".....how to hold a baby, play hockey, hold a golf club, whistle, do math, make maple syrup, draw a flower, make a puppet, wash dishes, take care of a dog, read a book, make a snowflake, and play kickball. I'm sure there were others.
Each child did a fabulous job!!!!

Our 100th Day of School

Finally! It's the 100th day of school.

We have been counting the days in

school and putting a stick in a container for

each day. We make bundles of 10's. We now have 10 bundles. We just counted

100 !!!!!!!!

We are counting 100 fruit loops for a neclace

to wear for our celebration. "Oh, oh, there

are only 7 places to put the fruit loops". (Mason)

"That makes only 70". (Owen) We figured out

that three sections needed 20 and 4 sections

needed 10 fruit loops to make 100.

"100 is long!" (Catherine)

The question of the day is "When can we eat them?"

We all brought in a collection of 100

small objects. We estimated how long our train would be when we glued them on a long sheet of paper. "I can't be finished. There's still room on the paper". (Lola) "Yours is longer than mine!" said Cali

Everybody's 100 looks different!

We glued objects in groups of 10. We discovered we needed 10 groups of 10!

"I wrote 10 ten times, I think I'm done". I thought I was going to run out of paper". (Diego)

"Some don't look like they're 100. They are

so different."

"Some are way tall. Some are really short."

We took a long time to study the collections.

We looked for the collection that was taller than

ours. Which one was shortest? Which collection was tallest?

THE BEST PART OF THE DAY WAS YET TO COME!

We had a party to celebrate! We had 10 bowls of food and planned to eat 10 of each. How can we eat 100 pieces of food???? "I can't do that, I'm going to bring them home." (Danny P.) Some kids decided they could never eat so much. One child thought he should stay home!

"I don't like raisins, can I skip them?" "I know....... I can take more marshmallow! (Jake)

My cup runneth over

Ms. Breines and Xilla thought the grapes were best!

"I think I can eat all of this". (Kaela) "It's really good". (Cali) "Yum!" (Juan)

You can see the calm and almost feel the silence.........F O O D......and of course, good company!!! The number 100 will never be the same.
